Jason Kidd and the Nets Ready for Preseason Debut

Ever since the Brooklyn Nets signed Jason Kidd as the head coach, questions are swirled on how good can he be. How will he transition from a player to a head coach? Can he command the respect of the players? Will he be able to make the right calls now that he's on the sidelines rather than on the court? Right now, Kidd is an unknown, but history tells us that he should be able to do his job.

“I think his instincts will take over,” King said. “In a game, he’ll see things, he’ll make the sub, just like he did as a player. He knew when to get the ball to vets. … He’ll understand when to get a guy out and when to go big, when to go small.”

“Because for 19 years, that’s what he was doing,” King added. “That’s one thing Coach K [Mike Krzyzewski] mentioned to me before I hired him: If you do hire him, then you got to let his instincts take over. Don’t put him in a box and say he’s got to be this type of coach.”

During training camp, Kidd let the assistants run the show when the team was together; Kidd went and talked to the player's individually.

But that was practice, his first official game with the team comes tonight against the Washington Wizards in the Nets' first preseason game. Despite this, Jason Kidd he has "no nerves" coming into this game.

With a brand new coach and a brand new vibe for this basketball club, it'll take time to gel together. Without Deron Williams, it may take a little longer than expected to see the true potential of this team.

"We probably really won't know what we are until we get Deron out there, get him acclimated before we start finding out what our true potential will be," Paul Pierce said. "... He’s going to be the engine that drives this and there’s only so much we can do until he gets back."

One paper, the Nets look good. In practices, the team has supposedly looked good as well. A game is a whole other matter however. How well the team performs will depend on a variety of factors. It's certain that Jason Kidd will be watched closely along with the newcomers in the first preseason game. Mistakes will be made, but if Kidd can adjust as a coach as well as he did as a player, the future of the franchise looks bright.
