On Tuesday, Billy King made a call to the Boston Celtics inquiring about Kevin Garnett's interest to play for the Nets. He hasn't received an answer yet, but that doesn't take away the possibility of KG coming to Brooklyn.
Garnett has a full no-trade clause in his contract which, last season, he said he would not waive in any scenario. But things are different in Boston now. Doc Rivers is in LA with the Clippers now and a re-build is in the Celtics very near future. Garnett may elect to waive the no-trade clause to go to a team that has a chance to win. He is 37 years old. Nobody wants to be a part of a re-build near the end of their career. And Garnett still has a lot to offer a win-now team.
The NBA blocked a proposed trade that would've sent Garnett to the Clippers along with Doc Rivers. So it looks more and more likely that the Celtics will try to unload his two year, $24.4 million contract.
The first question you ask is does KG fit in with the current Nets roster. You then ask yourself why you would even consider asking that question. Garnett is exactly what the Nets are lacking. A power forward who is a leader on and off the court, who also has championship experience. Of every player on the Nets roster, there are zero players that have won an NBA championship. None of the players know what it's like to play, and win, in the NBA Finals.
There is a lot Garnett can offer the Nets on the court besides emotion and leadership. He is still very capable of playing at a high level. In just under 30 minutes per game in the 2012-13 season, he averaged 14.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. His playoff numbers were even more impressive, though. In the six games against the New York Knicks, he averaged 12.7 points and grabbed 13.7 rebounds per game. Not too shabby for a guy with 18 NBA seasons under his belt.
Besides what stats tell you, Garnett is one of the best help defenders in the NBA, something the Nets lacked big time down low. Though he doesn't block shots like he used to, KG is still very much capable of protecting the rim.
What will it take to lure Garnett away from the Celtics? Who knows. But we assume that it will take more than Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks, and a pick. #HBAP
