Third time's a charm for Damion James?

In the 2010 NBA Draft, the then New Jersey Nets traded their first round selection, Jordan Crawford, to the Atlanta Hawks for small forward Damion James. James is now a 25 year old who has had his career derailed in just three years, due to the inability to stay healthy. He now finds himself on the Nets summer league roster after signing a 10-day contract with them during the regular season. This is James' third shot at making it with the Nets. But how can he help them now?

The strongest part of James' game is his versatility on defense. He has the ability to guard multiple positions because of his agility. He has a very high motor and can provide a spark off the bench with his athleticism.

James also has the ability to shoot the ball over his defender. His high release makes it tough on defenders that try to block his shot. James is also a tenacious rebounder for someone his size. He relies on offensive rebounding to help him get his points.

The big negative in his game is what we like to call his "stone hands." This means that he has trouble handling the ball at times. He often turns the ball over, having done so seven times in two summer league games. But handling isn't something that can't be worked on.

In the two summer league games he has played in, James is averaging 10 points on 48% shooting. He's also averaging just over four rebounds a game. He has shown spurts of that talent here and there in the two games, but it's too soon to tell if he is going to play well consistently.

James could get offered an invite to the Nets' training camp, where he could work hard to show GM Billy King and head coach Jason Kidd why he deserves to occupy one of the two vacant roster spots. With the potential of Bojan Bogdanovic coming to Brooklyn, that leaves one vacant spot for James to try and earn.
