With the new-look Nets roster complete, superstar point guard Deron Williams will have a lot of high expectations to face for the 2013-14 season.
The expectations Deron faces are natural for a superstar point guard with a potential powerhouse team built around him. The biggest expectation is that he comes back healthy and ready to be the D-Will that was considered to be the best point guard in the NBA while playing with the Utah Jazz.
What people expected from Deron took a huge leap when both Jason Terry and new head coach Jason Kidd stated that he should, and will be in the MVP conversation. Nobody really thought of Deron as an MVP type of player before this roster was built, so those words coming from Terry and Kidd may be a big time confidence boost for him.
Under coach Jason Kidd, Deron will be expected to become the facilitator on the floor. If there's anyone to learn how to become that from, Jason Kidd is the guy you want. Williams is an extremely underrated passer. You can't look at his assist numbers from last season and judge his passing ability off of that.
Last year, Deron was limited to passing to either Joe Johnson or Brook Lopez. With Gerald Wallace having extremely uncharacteristic struggles on offense and Reggie Evans serving as only a rebounder, Deron often found himself struggling to move the ball. The inability to do so increases the amount of isolation plays that are run.
What do the fans expect from Deron Williams? The most common answer I got when asking what they want to see was "at least 10 assists." His leadership ability is also another factor that fans want to see change. He needs to become a complete on and off-the-floor leader and help his teammates get better while also bettering himself. He has shown his willingness to take the reigns after already planning a players-only workout in Los Angeles.
Williams does have a lot to face this year when it comes to expectations from the media, the fans, the Nets organization, but for the most part himself. Deron Williams is a smart basketball player with all the talent in the world. He knows what he has to do, and we expect him to do that, and maybe even more.
