In a surprising development, Paul Pierce may be able to return to action much sooner than expected.
The forward, a 10-time all star who is shooting just 36.8% from the field this season, sustained a broken hand on Nov. 29 and was initially expected to miss 2-4 weeks.
It seems that the recovery process is going quite well, as Pierce practiced today for the first time since the injury and could play in a game again as soon as tomorrow night's contest against the Boston Celtics, Pierce's team for the first 15 years of his NBA career. Pierce says that there is a "good chance" that he plays tomorrow, as reported by Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.
"It's bearable now. I've been able to shoot the last three days. Before that I probably couldn't catch the ball or palm the ball. Still some pain there, but it's something I can play with," said Pierce, according to Jay King of Mass Live.
Pierce, who is known for playing through injuries, may even come off of the bench for the Brooklyn Nets, Newsday's Rod Boone says.
The Nets will also get star point guard Deron Williams back tomorrow night, after he missed Brooklyn's last nine games with a hurt ankle.
Things may finally be looking up for Brooklyn. Coming off a win against the Milwaukee Bucks, the Nets have two of their best players returning. When Pierce comes back to play, whether it is tomorrow or further down the road, it will be the first time the Nets' starting five of Williams, Pierce, Joe Johnson, Kevin Garnett and Brook Lopez plays together since their victory over the Phoenix Suns on Nov. 15.
