Brooklyn Nets sign center Jason Collins to 10-day contract

In search of a big man that they could not obtain before the trade deadline, the Brooklyn Nets recently worked out Jason Collins in hopes of finding someone they could use. While his statistics don't really hold up to being a solid back-up center, the Nets feel like he is somebody that could help this team, and so they signed him to a 10-day contract that became official on Sunday.

The Nets were reportedly chasing after Glen Davis, but they lost that race to the Los Angeles Clippers. With not many big men left, Collins was signed to help the Brooklyn Nets. Knowing that Jason Collins is now the first openly gay athlete in the four major sports in this country, Billy King reassured that public that it was a basketball decision, as reported by Rod Boone of Newsday.

"The decision to sign Jason was a basketball decision," Nets general manager Billy King said in a statement. "We needed to increase our depth inside, and with his experience and size, we felt he was the right choice for a 10-day contract."

Then again, that's always to answer to any signing.

Collins may be a bit on the older side, but friends and fans alike are excited to see what Collins can bring to the table. He will be used as a banger down low, someone who can help with both rebounding and defense if possible. One of Collins' teammates back in Stanford was surprised by how in shape Collins appeared to be.

New NBA Commissioner Adam Silver offered his congratulations to Jason Collins.

"Jason told us that his goal was to earn another contract with an NBA team. Today, I want to commend him on achieving his goal. I know everyone in the NBA family is excited for him and proud that our league fosters an inclusive and respectful environment."
