R.I.P BrooklyKnight... Now What?

The BrooklyKnight... *shudder*

Late on July 9, Grantland’s Zach Lowe, noted mascot aficionado, broke some news that made a bunch of Nets fans happy: the BrooklyKnight, the Marvel-created mascot who was most known for looking like a Power Ranger, scaring children, and missing dunks, would not be returning for the 2014-15 season.

The mascot, which has received nonstop criticism since its debut at the Nets first game in Brooklyn, will be scarcely missed. Instead of being the "protector of Brooklyn's hometown basketball team, the Brooklyn Nets, defender of New York's largest and most courageous borough, and ruler of Barclays Center," as Marvel billed it to be upon debut, the BrooklyKnight’s legacy will be known as a nightmare inducing disaster.

So where do the Nets go from here with their mascot? They have a few options, some more popular than others:

1. Bring back Sly the Silver Fox (and Mini-Sly!)
Former New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets' mascots, Sly and Mini-SlySeemingly, the most popular option among Nets fans would be to bring back the mascot from the New Jersey days, Sly the Silver Fox, and his partner, Mini-Sly. This option is least likely, however, as Sly and Mini-Sly, despite their popularity, represent the New Jersey years, which is not consistent with the fresh start the franchise is looking for in Brooklyn.

2. Re-design the BrooklyKnight
After the New Orleans Pelicans original mascot, Pierre the Pelican, received negative reviews (somehow worse and scarier than the BrooklyKnight), they re-designed Pierre midseason. The Nets could do something similar and actually make the BrooklyKnight to look more like an actual knight and less like a Power Ranger.

3. Create an entirely new mascot
Maybe the Nets could go back to Marvel and design a new mascot. Maybe they could independently create a mascot, pertaining to Brooklyn. Maybe they could design a completely random mascot, like the Phoenix Suns have in their gorilla. The possibilities are endless.

4. Go with no mascot
Lastly, the Nets could completely ditch the idea of a mascot and have no character roaming the crowd at home games.

Personally, I prefer for the team to either go back to Sly and Mini-Sly or go with no mascot at all. I loved the two mascots in New Jersey, and creating another new mascot could bring more disastrous results. Either bring back the fan favorite, or ditch the concept entirely.
