In their first matchup of the season, the Clippers embarrassed the Nets at the Staples Center in a 39 point blowout. So round two came to the Barclays Center, and it was a totally different story. It went down to the wire, and the Nets were able to pull out the win in Brooklyn.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the first quarter, but it didn't last long as the quarter ended in a tie at 22. It was the DeAndre Jordan show for the Clippers, as he put up nine points and grabbed six rebounds in the quarter alone. Those scoring numbers could have been much larger, as he shot just 1-9 from the free throw line. The Nets weren't able to stop the Clippers from scoring off of alley-oop's, and that's how the Clippers got the majority of their points in the quarter.
It was Brook Lopez's turn to put on a show in the second quarter, and he simply could not miss. After a 35 point effort against the Raptors, Lopez continued to score at will. He entered half time with 18 points off of the bench, and was the number one reason why the Nets held a 38-36 lead at the half.
Besides Lopez's hot shooting, it was an extremely slow quarter for both teams. Both failed to score 20 points in the quarter, and the Clippers scored just 14.
It looked like the Clippers were starting to pull away in the third, but the Nets took the punch and climbed back into it. Los Angeles led by nine at one point in the quarter, but Brooklyn responded to get themselves back into it quickly. Both teams were lighting it up, and both followed up a second quarter that lacked scoring with a quarter where both teams scored over 30 points. The Clippers held a 72-70 lead at the end of three quarters.
The Clippers began pulling away from Brooklyn once again in the fourth quarter. Their lead grew to as much as 11, but the Nets were once again able to answer and draw closer. Joe Johnson missed two free throws late in the quarter, but a huge offensive rebound by Brook Lopez led to a deep three by Johnson, bringing the Nets to within just two points. Alan Anderson would hit a huge four point play to give the Nets a two point lead with 23 seconds left, but Chris Paul was able to tie it with eight seconds remaining. The Nets had time to answer, and Jarrett Jack took advantage of a mismatch, nailing the game winning jumper over DeAndre Jordan.
DeAndre Jordan had the stat-line of the game, finishing with 22 points and 20 rebounds. Brook Lopez finished with 24 points and seven rebounds off the bench, and in his return from a rib injury, Deron Williams put up 15 points on 5-8 shooting. Joe Johnson added 22 points, five rebounds, and six assists.
