Player Preview : C.J. Watson

C.J. Watson put his name on the map last year when filling in for Derrick Rose. Averaging basically 10 points and 4 assist per game was pretty decent in Chicago. He will have a chance to flourish in Brooklyn under the restricted role that is given from Avery Johnson. That remains to be seen but C.J has hidden talent.

The Brooklyn Nets are the hottest thing out right now. Besides everyone talking bout the Lakers, the Nets have made major moves. The addition of Joe Johnson and the move to Brooklyn illuminated the franchise while also landing a bulls-eye with all the hype and confidence. Now the Nets will be watched under a magnifying glass from all sorts of fans and players. The good thing though, is that C.J. Watson now has a full season to perform under the bright lights. Sure C.J. was in the playoffs last year but he was out of position. A player like him needs to just score because that is what he does best. Most people don't know he scored 40 points in a game. Yes, it was against Sacramento but that does not take away his talent. C.J Watson is perfect for this team and here are some reasons why.
The Nets have players that can do multiple things but Deron Williams and  Joe Johnson are the players that can really help C.J. which turns into an added boost for the Nets. Avery Johnson has stated that he would like to have one of his two starting guards on the floor at all times which means C.J can play his role. He shot 39 percent from the field last year and that was without a play-maker.  Deron Williams and Joe Johnson can both make plays and since they draw so much attention, look for Watson to be more efficient. Now I know Avery will have Deron and Joe on the bench sometimes this season but that shouldn't be a problem. This team has many pieces that provide match-up problems which will leave him to just spot up and shoot. Not to say that C.J shouldn't handle the ball because I know he can. But I believe that he is better coming off of screens and spotting up. There have been many of times in the playoffs last year and this years pre-season where he would sometimes be erratic. Losing the ball, over dribbling or just taking bad shots would be the case and the Nets do not need it. Also, Watson does need to work on his defense along with the Nets. He has a tendency to gamble for steals which puts his team in a situation that is bound to give a bucket or a foul. Most likely, the defensive cleverness from Avery Johnson and players can at least calm him down on most possessions. Overall, I think C.J. can bring the Nets instant offense. A poor man's Monta Ellis would be a perfect description for C.J. and that is a great addition. C.J Watson can also set the tone for the bench. The talented pieces are there which gives Avery a plethora of plays to draw up. Hopefully, C.J. can live up to his nickname "Quiet Storm" and let it rain on defenses consistently like he did Dwyane Wade in the playoffs last season.
