If you ever want a guy on your team that can shoot from anywhere on the floor and plays the power forward position while doing it, Mirza Teletovic is the guy you need. The fact that he is 6'9" and can shoot a ball from beyond the three point line and make it consistently is amazing. Coming over to the NBA from the Euroleague he will need time to adjust to the faster paced play style. The talent he has can definitely be a nice compliment to the guys he is on the floor with. He's a stretch forward who can clear a lot of space down low for either Brook Lopez or Andray Blatche. His ability to play the small forward position is a key. This compliments the philosophy of Billy King, who is preaching versatility.
Teletovic isn't the kind of guy who will grab a lot of rebounds or play hard nosed defense. He has one role on this team and that's as a spot shooter. Avery Johnson has criticized him for pump faking and putting the ball on the floor too much. He doesn't want Mirza doing that. He wants him to shoot the ball, which is what he is here to do. Given the time to adjust, Mirza should be able to work out these flaws in his play style and be a very good NBA player. He has played in the Euroleague since he was 16. That's a long time so he is accustomed to the slower pace and different rules. Now a 27 year old, he will have to get used to the differences the NBA has from Europe.
Mirza will have a lot of work to do if he wants to be a successful NBA player, but the key to him being successful is the amount of time he is given by his coaching staff, the fans and the media to make his adjustment to the league. His adjustment is key. But he won't be able to make it if he is being ridden hard for "under-performing" or not hitting his shot to start off. He has shown in Europe that he can put the ball in the hoop. Last season he averaged 21.7 points per game with his former team, Caja Laboral as well as 6 rebounds a game. He is a proven scorer. With just a few tweaks, he could wind up playing a huge role off the bench, as well as a spot start here and there.
