Alex Kennedy: Brooklyn Nets Want to Keep MarShon Brooks

For the past few years the Brooklyn Nets have been involved in several blockbuster trade rumors. MarShon Brooks' impressive rookie season and seemingly lack of playing time allows Nets fans to have MarShon Brooks be a part in future trade rumors. Since the Nets have not outwardly said they will try to obtain such and such players, fans bring it onto themselves to produce trades for players that Nets could use. There is no harm in that at all, but Alex Kennedy of Hoopsworld may have people rethink a player's value.

In a public "chat", one questioner asked Alex Kennedy on his thoughts on MarShon Brooks. His playing time is substantially lower than last years' (understandably) and he seems to be lost at times. Coach Avery Johnson played him very little which could have hurt his growth. Being 23 years old when joining the NBA certainly doesn't help. Here is the exchange:
Aaron
what are your thoughts on Marshon Brooks? why wasnt he traded to the hawks in the joe johnson deal? Will he get dealt this year? Ive always said he is one of the most talented guards in the league and one of the best scorers
Alex Kennedy
I think MarShon Brooks could eventually become a very good player. He’s an excellent scorer and he has a ton of upside. That’s why he wasn’t traded to the Hawks in the Joe Johnson deal, because the Nets value him and wanted to keep him. I don’t think he’ll get dealt. He’s had some trouble accepting a lesser role in Brooklyn, but I think the Nets realize just how talented he is and see his potential so they’d rather hold onto him and develop him.
This is purely opinion, since nobody knows what is going on inside of GM Billy King's head but the theory is interesting. Instead of swapping future first-round picks with the Atlanta Hawks, the Nets could have thrown in MarShon Brooks, whose growth and playing time would be hindered with the arrival of Joe Johnson. Brooks has offensive talent and it was put on display last season for those who watched. Even opposing commentators praised his performances regularly. There is little doubt that he is indeed talented but with such a limited role, people began to think that he would be a good trade chip.

If Alex Kennedy speaks the truth, those thoughts go out the window.

MarShon Brooks is an interesting case, and his role on the team will be interesting to see develop.
