What to expect from the Nets this season

The Nets certainly went out and made a splash this offseason, grabbing almost every headline of the summer. Starting on draft night, Billy King went out and made a blockbuster deal bringing Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Jason Terry to Brooklyn. If that wasn't enough, King also came up with the biggest steal of the summer adding Andrei Kirilenko to the mix for the mini mid-level exception. Mikhail Prokhorov dug deep into his pockets, spending over $180M on this roster.

With all these additions, very minimal subtractions, the Nets have instantly put themselves as a contender for the NBA Championship. They now have what may be the best starting five in the league with Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Pierce, Garnett, and Brook Lopez. But beyond the starters, the bench is one of the deepest in the league.

The Nets have a lot of power in the NBA now, as they have become the latest version of a "super team." So much talent put together on one team can only leave everyone with one expectation: a championship. Anything other than that is a failure for a team of this caliber.

The Nets will more than likely face some growing pains, as they did in December of last season. But adding guys like Garnett and Pierce, two future hall of famers, will make the growing pains a bit smoother. Both players know what needs to be done in order to win a championship. Kevin Garnett used one word when describing how to win, and that word is "sacrifice." Each player will have to sacrifice something in order to make a team like this work.

The advantage the Nets have is that they don't have any selfish players. And with a coach whose main focus will be ball movement, this team he was given is perfect.

So what exactly do we expect from the Nets in the 2013-2014 season? We should first expect the growing pains. No new team goes into a season and meshes immediately. It will take time. How much time, nobody knows. After the players build up the chemistry and get settled into the new system, expect the Nets to play championship-caliber basketball. The team will make it to the playoffs easily.

The seeding of the top of the eastern conference will not be determined until the very end of the season. They could land anywhere in the top four, but more likely will fall somewhere between the second and fourth seed, with Miami taking the first seed of course. I predict somewhere between 53-60 wins with an exit in the Eastern Conference Finals, losing to the Miami Heat in six games.
