Could the Nets be retiring Jason Kidd's number?

It's one of the more fun moments for athletes at any level; the picking of the jersey number. For many athletes, the jersey number defines who they are and what they represent. In some rare cases, if you perform at such an incredible level your jersey number will be retired in the rafters of the arena that you played in. Unfortunately for Mason Plumlee, his number picking process will be limited because he will not be able to wear the number 5 that he wore in his days in Cameron Indoor Stadium playing for the Duke Blue Devils. In fact, Plumlee recently stated that the reason why he won't be able to wear number 5 is because the Nets are going to retire Jason Kidd's jersey who wore number 5 in his time with the Nets.

Plumlee recently stated, “I wanted 5, 5 is what I wore in college. I don’t want to spoil it, but I think [the Nets] are going to retire it [for Jason Kidd]. 21 was what I was going to wear next and then they were said KG might want 21. Then 00 was taken so I went with the next number, number 1.”

Although The Basketball Jones reported the suspicion regarding the number 5 when Kevin Garnett didn't take it, he also wore 5 in Boston, Garnett has said that he chose number 2 in order to honor his Timberwolves teammate Malik Sealy who died in a car accident. If Kidd's number is retired he will be the 7th player in Nets history to have their number retired. The current retired Nets players are Wendell Ladner (4), Bill Melchionni (25), Julius Erving (32), John Williamson (23), Drazen Petrovic (3) and Charles "Buck" Williams (52).
