If you wanted to show a child examples of how to play good defense, this game should not be in the pile of tapes to show them. Neither team decided to play any defense in the first half, which seems like a common occurrence lately for the Nets. Brooklyn allowed Utah to put up 33 first quarter points, but came back in the second quarter with an improved defensive input as the Jazz put up just 19 points. The Nets led 54-52 at halftime led by Brook Lopez, who put up 13 points, and Deron Williams, who put up 11 points. Things got a bit chippy between Deron and Jamaal Tinsley after a shove from Tinsley, but the altercation was immediately broken up by referees. Knowing Deron Williams, that kind of nonsense usually sends him into a motivated outburst in the form of points. But that wasn't the case tonight.
The Nets absolutely fell apart in the second half. The turnovers continued to pile up and the defense continued to not exist. Nets wing defenders allowed Randy Foye to make five three pointers in the third quarter. After leading by 16 at one point, the Jazz began to let up a bit as the Nets started chipping into the deficit, cutting it to five. But Utah would continue to drain what seemed like every shot, and the Nets couldn't catch up. Interior defense was almost the worst it has been all season, but the perimeter defense was what cost the Nets the game. Allowing a team to make 10-17 three pointers will rarely show in favor of the opposing team, and that was the case tonight for the Nets.
Brook Lopez led the Nets with 27 points and also grabbed seven rebounds. Deron Williams added 21 points and 11 assists. C.J. Watson came off the bench to score 22 and MarShon Brooks added 12 points.
