Paul Pierce's Future with the Nets is Unclear

The Brooklyn Nets off-season addition Paul Pierce has said good things about the franchise. How long he'll be apart of this team remains to be uncertain.

Paul Pierce's contract ends after this season, and when asked about his future by Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe, he didn't seem confident on whether the Brooklyn Nets are in his plans.

“Who knows what’s going to happen after this year?” said Pierce. “I don’t know what the future is going to bring. I don’t know if I’m going to be back with the Nets. I don’t know if I’m going to retire, you never know what’s going to happen. I feel like I have more in the tank but you never know with injuries, how your body feels. Sometimes those things tell you a lot quicker. Right now, I’ve been feeling good. My legs, my body feels strong.”

Disregarding any major injuries, its likely that Paul Pierce retires after this season unless the Nets win a championship (what better sendoff than with a ring). However, in the article, Paul Pierce mentions how he feels nostalgic about his time with the Boston Celtics.

“What I’ve been doing since the trade, this has given me a chance to look back at my career as a Celtic,” he said. “I’m going through my stuff packing, going through all my old pictures, former teammates, people I’ve had relationships with, it’s surreal. That’s been hard, just all the stuff that you did out there, not even on the court but in the community. The foundation, how we elevated a lot of people in this community, and I am going to miss that.”

Paul Pierce does mention the Celtics as a possibility in the future, but after he retires from playing.

Asked if this is his last camp, Pierce said, “Maybe one day I may start another camp if I get an office job with the Celtics. Who knows? This year was the last official Paul Pierce camp at Basketball City.”

The move from Boston left an empty feeling with Paul Pierce, a realization that it was a city he loved and always thought he would be a part of. Playing against that team is going to be an internal struggle, one that he doesn't think he can go through twice in one season.

“I am going to probably rest that game, it will be too much, two times [in Boston] in one year,” he said when asked about playing in the October 23rd preseason game against the Celtics.
