Billy King: Brook Lopez may have put on too much weight

Billy King thinks Brook Lopez may have gained too much muscle mass

The Brooklyn Nets have had a kind of unexpected season. Brook Lopez, who gained a lot of weight (in muscle) during the off-season as he rehabbed, was someone Nets fan really wanted to see succeed alongside Kevin Garnett and the rest of the new additions.

Clearly, that did not work out that well as Lopez ended up injuring himself once again and has borderline become injury-prone over the last two years. Now, he's missing the rest of the season and probably the playoffs.

Why? Billy King said in a radio interview on Tuesday that he though Lopez "maybe got too heavy".

Just a reminder that Lopez gained 15 pounds due to his workouts this summer and was labelled at 290 pounds.
“We’re going to change how we approach him, maybe with his weight. He maybe got too heavy. We’re going to try to modify that, as well, and look at some other things as well to take some of the pressure off his foot.”
Foot problems for big men have caused many problems, including continuous plaguing of the great career that could have been for Yao Ming. With Lopez, his career could, hopefully not, end up like Yao Ming or like that of Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who overcame several foot surgeries and extended his career enough to get his number retired in Cleveland.

Lopez, on the other hand, thinks that this was not the problem, as he stated last month.
“I don’t think so,” he said last month when asked again if he got too heavy last offseason. “It happened when I was 20 pounds lighter. So I don’t think that was an issue.”
Whatever the problem was, the Nets doctors will have their hands full trying to keep Lopez from suffering another major injury. He's been quite the offensive terror for the Nets and once he went down it took time for this team to create another offensive identity.
