Top Five Trades In Nets History

The Nets history has contained some franchise altering trades, one that produced two trips to the NBA finals and one that brought two ABA championships. These trades have led to the formation of some competitive teams. Here is an interpretation of the top five trades in Nets history.

5) Nets - Rockets trade: Draft Day, June 27th, 2001

Nets Receive: Richard Jefferson (13th pick), Brandon Armstrong, Jason Collins (18th pick)

Rockets Receive: Eddie Griffin (7th pick)

This deal, consummated on Draft Day 2001, was a highly beneficial trade for the Nets. The Nets drafted Eddie Griffin with the 7th pick in the 2001 draft,  and immediately traded him to the Rockets for the 13th pick (Jefferson), the 18th pick (Jason Collins) and Brandon Armstrong. Griffin, a star out of Seton Hall, would play two productive seasons for the Rockets averaging close to 9 points per game in 25 minutes, he would eventually be waved by the Rockets in 2004. The pieces the Nets acquired in the trade, would contribute to two finals teams. The best player in the trade, small forward Richard Jefferson out of Arizona, would play seven seasons in New Jersey and would be a core piece for many competitive teams. He averaged over 20 ppg twice in his Nets career. Jason Collins, would play six season with the Nets.

4) Nets - Jazz trade: February 23rd, 2011

Nets Receive: Deron Williams

Jazz Receive  Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, 2011 Nets First Round Pick ( Enes Kanter), 2013 Warriors First Round Pick

This trade came in the wake of a disaster, after numerous months of pursuing disgruntled Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony, he would be traded to the rival New York Knicks on February 22nd, 2011. The Nets, who had failed to acquire a superstar in one of the best free agent classes in 2010, were once again left without a superstar. With the impending move to Brooklyn, being competitive was essential. In a trade that came out of nowhere, the Nets acquired Jazz point guard Deron Williams, one upping the Knicks. The Nets gave up a very talented young big man in Derrick Favors, as well as multiple draft picks, but they finally received a star. Williams, who's contract situation was an issue, would eventually spur the hometown Dallas Mavericks and re-sign with the Nets. The Nets would continue to build a competitive team by adding Gerald Wallace and Joe Johnson, as well as re-signing Brook Lopez and Kris Humphries. The Nets will now have a good, hyped team going into Brooklyn, the main goal for many years.

3) Nets - Raptors trade: December 17th, 2004

Nets Receive: Vince Carter

Raptors Receive: Alonzo Mourning, Aaron Williams, Eric Williams, 2005 76ers First Round Pick (Joey Graham), 2006 Nuggets First Round Pick (Renaldo Balkman)

Possibly one of the most lopsided trades of the decade, the Nets robbed the Raptors. None of the players traded to the Raptors would contribute much to the Raptors. Alonzo Mourning would never play a game for the Raptors, he would be waived and sign with the Miami Heat, where he would contribute to their 2006 championship. Aaron Williams would play under two seasons for Toronto and average under 2 ppg each year, Eric Williams played just two season with the team as well. The pick that they received in the 2005 draft would turn into Joey Graham, a mediocre bench warmer. They never got a chance to use the other pick that they received, as they traded it to the New York Knicks. Vince Carter would average over 20 ppg in every one of his five seasons for the Nets as well as break scoring records. He contributed to three playoff teams and helped the Nets win an Atlantic Division title.

2) Nets - Squires trade: ABA, 1973

Nets Receive: Julius Erving, Willie Sojourner

Squires Receive: George Carter, Kermit Washington, Cash

The New York Nets were falling out of relevancy in the ABA, they had just lost Rick Barry to the NBA and were looking for a way to rebound. They did a lot more then rebound, as they traded for future hall of famer Julius Erving. The Nets didnt give up much, and in return got two ABA championships. Erving, possibly the best player in Nets history if you include the ABA, would lead the Nets through their best period in their history to this day. This trade would be number one if ABA records counted in the NBA, but unfortunately ABA records are irrelevant to NBA history. Erving would play three seasons with the Nets and would be sold to the Philadelphia 76ers as the Nets entered the NBA in 1976.

1) Nets - Suns trade: July 18th, 2001

Nets Recieve: Jason Kidd, Chris Dudley

Suns Receive: Stephon Marbury, Johnny Newman, Soumaila Samake

The Nets received the best NBA player in their history in this trade. The deal changed the franchise more drastically than any deal on this list. The Nets were a perennial loser in the NBA, rarely making the playoffs and only advancing past the first round once. The team would morph into an Eastern Conference powerhouse, as they would surprisingly win 50 games led by Kidd, Kenyon Martin and Kerry Kittles. They would make consecutive trips to the NBA finals in 2002 and 2003 and lose to the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs. After that team broke up, the team would acquire Vince Carter and the Nets would go to the playoffs for three straight years. Kidd is regarded as the Nets best player in their history, since he led them to their most successful run in the NBA, which consisted of six straight trips to the playoffs and four Atlantic Division titles. The Suns would keep Marbury for under three seasons and eventually trade him to the Knicks. While Marbury did average over 20 ppg in his time with the Suns, his team made the playoffs once and never got past the first round.
