The key goal for Joe in 2013 is to find his consistency. He's having too many games where he will start off hot and then completely disappear or vice versa. His stats are well below his career averages across the board. He enters 2013 averaging 16.8 points, three rebounds, and three and a half assists per game. He is also shooting only 42.2% from the field including 36.4% from the three point line. His adjustment to the new team has drawn a lot of criticism with both him and Deron Williams struggling.
Offensively: Johnson is back to being iso-Joe since coming over from Atlanta. It was expected that he would not be in as many isolation plays with more offensive talent around him. Too many of his shots are being taken out of an isolation set. He needs to become more of a catch and shoot player. That leads into another offensive issue. His shot off of a pass, or his catch and shoot, is lacking consistency. In times where he's getting the ball behind the three point line and is wide open, he misses. For example:
Defense: A lot of things need to change for Johnson on the defensive end of the floor. The main thing is not letting smaller opponents blow past him. We've seen guys like Monta Ellis and Klay Thompson destroy Johnson on the defensive end. His steals per game are down somewhat and are sitting at 0.5 per game.
Johnson has had his moments so far this season. He's made clutch shots, broke some ankles, and put up big numbers. But he has a lot to work on in his game to help him improve during the 2013 portion of the season.
Resolution: Find consistency in his offense.
Happy New Year!
